Smoothness and performance: Their compact single overhead camshaft design and long piston stroke deliver more low-end torque for excellent acceleration even when pushing heavy loads in Mercury FourStroke 40-60 hp outboards.
The large displacement, long stroke, four cylinders, and single overhead camshaft ensure optimal power and smooth operation with Command Thrust models.

Butterfly screw clamp: The 40 hp manual start, long shaft (20 in / 508 mm), tiller steer model is also available with a butterfly screw clamp. This clamp reduces the time and effort needed to install/remove the outboard on/from the boat transom.

The Big Tiller: The optional centrally mounted Big Tiller offers optimal control. A longer tiller handle integrates a convenient trim button, the shift lever is within reach, and an optional digital trolling control allows engine speed to be reduced down to 700 RPM in 10 RPM increments.

Instant starts / energy efficiency: Mercury's Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) ensures reliable instant starting, greater fuel efficiency, immediate throttle response, and protection against fuel quality issues.

Charging system: A high-output 18 amp alternator keeps batteries charged and fishing electronics powered.

More control, more power: A 2.33:1 gear ratio with 44% larger gears provides greater thrust. The desmodromic gear shift is ultra-smooth.
A lower unit that dips deeper into the water, a propeller with 20% more blade area, and a lower gear ratio ensure unmatched thrust, maneuverability, and planing.
