Flexibility and performance: Their simple inline camshaft design and long piston stroke give Mercury FourStroke outboards 40 - 60 hp more torque at low speeds for excellent acceleration even under heavy load.
The large displacement, long stroke, four-cylinder configuration, and single camshaft ensure optimal power and smooth navigation with Command Thrust models.

Pressed-pull starter: The 40 hp model with manual start, long shaft (20 inches / 508 mm), and tiller steering is also available with a pressed-pull starter. This starter reduces the time and effort needed to remove/reinstall the outboard motor on the boat's transom.

Big Tiller: The centrally mounted Big Tiller, optional, offers optimal control. A longer tiller handle includes a convenient trim button, the reverse gear lever is within reach, and an optional digital trail control allows reducing engine RPM down to 700 rpm in 10 rpm steps.

Instant starts / Energy efficiency: Mercury's electronic fuel injection (EFI) ensures reliable instant starts, greater energy efficiency, immediate throttle response, and protection against fuel quality issues.
