Flexibility and performance: Its compact design with a simple overhead camshaft and long piston stroke confers Mercury FourStroke outboards 40 - 60 hp more torque at low rpm for excellent acceleration even when pushing a heavy load.
The large displacement, long stroke, four cylinders, and single overhead camshaft ensure optimal power and smooth navigation with Command Thrust models.

Quick start with throttle control: The 40 hp model with manual start, long shaft (20 in / 508 mm), and tiller steer is also available with a throttle lever. This eases removal/remounting of the outboard motor on the boat’s transom.

The Big Tiller: The centrally mounted Big Tiller, optional, provides optimal control. A longer tiller handle integrates a convenient trim button, the reverse gear lever is within reach, and an optional digital throttle control allows reducing engine rpm down to 700 rpm in steps of 10 rpm.

Instant starts / Energy efficiency: Mercury's electronic fuel injection (EFI) provides reliable instant starts, greater energy efficiency, immediate throttle response, and protection against fuel quality issues.

Charging system: A high-capacity 18-amp alternator keeps batteries charged and fishing electronics operational.

More control, more power: A gear ratio of 2.33:1 with larger gears (44% bigger) delivers increased push. The desmodromic reverse gear is ultra-smooth.
A deeper-propulsion mount, a propeller with 20% more blade surface, and a lower gear ratio ensure unmatched thrust, maneuverability, and shallow water capability.

Value: The Command Thrust 60 hp offers the same acceleration and energy efficiency as the 70 hp competing outboard models.
