Mercury Marine 1st Mate, the first man overboard and anti-theft (TDS) proximity-based system integrated into an engine in the marine industry.
Mercury's 1st Mate is the world’s first man overboard and anti-theft (TDS) proximity-based system integrated into an engine. Using a set of sophisticated wearable devices designed for up to 8 people, 1st Mate cuts the engine or triggers an alarm during a Man Overboard (MOB) event, and optionally sends notifications to emergency contacts. If the electronic key is out of range, the system disables the engine or limits its power. All these functions address the most important needs of boaters, namely safety and security. 1st Mate consists of an intelligent hub, a set of wearable products, and a mobile device application that integrate with a boat’s propulsion systems to provide safety functions that can save lives and help secure assets. Its three main features are: man overboard monitoring and alert system, distress call capability, and theft deterrence for the boat and/or its engine(s).
The three main features of this product operate as follows:
Man Overboard Monitoring and Alert System
This system protects the boat’s captain and up to seven passengers. If the system detects that the captain has fallen overboard, the device sends alerts to the system hub, its app, and all passengers’ wearable devices. The system shuts off the engines and sends specific instructions to the passengers’ mobile phones via the app. The instructions assist passengers in restarting the engines and safely returning the boat to the location where the man overboard incident occurred. Similarly, if a passenger falls overboard, the system sends alerts to the captain and the other passengers. The captain receives heading instructions that enable bringing the boat back to the location of the man overboard.
Distress Messaging
If a boat’s captain is alone and the system detects he has fallen overboard, it sends a distress message to a list of emergency contacts entered by the captain in the app. The distress message includes the GPS position along with the time and date of the man overboard incident. This feature is also useful when the captain is not alone and falls overboard, but the passengers, for whatever reason, are unable to bring the boat back to the man overboard location or recover the captain on board.
Anti-Theft Device
Some of the system’s anti-theft capabilities vary depending on the boat engine’s technologies. In all cases, the system offers engine locking functions. For boats equipped with Mercury outboard engines featuring Mercury SmartCraft technology, the system requires not only an "unlock" command from the captain’s app or a wearable device to operate the engines, but also requires engines that have been removed from the boat to detect a "handshake" from the system before they can be restarted.
