Coastal boat license: What does the new 2022 reform say?

Originally scheduled for April 1, 2022, the reform related to the leisure boating license Option Coastal and inland waters should be implemented from June 1, 2022.

From that date on, the method of obtaining the motorboat license undergoes some changes and mainly targets the theoretical training.

The river or offshore license is not concerned by this new measure.
 

What is a leisure boating license Option Coastal or coastal license?

The leisure boating license Option Coastal allows you to pilot a pleasure boat with a propulsion system exceeding 4.5 kilowatts (6 horsepower) up to 6 miles from shelter.

With this license, you can also use the VHF in French territorial waters and practice jet skiing or personal watercraft.

Sailing vessels or sailboats with an engine less than 6 HP do not require a license.



However, every user should be familiar with the navigation rules to operate a craft safely.

You can obtain the coastal license from the age of 16. To get it, you must register at a boating school and follow theoretical training then practical instruction.

Coastal boat license: 2022 reform - what changes?

If you are considering buying a new boat, a used boat, or wish to rent a boat during your holidays with an engine exceeding 6 horsepower, you must pass your license.

Admission conditions remain unchanged regarding documents to be presented:
 

• Register via the form required by the Ministry of the Sea
• Provide a boat license medical fitness certificate issued by your attending physician

The theoretical exam evolves. Although the official multiple-choice questions (MCQ) remain the same, candidates will have to answer 40 questions instead of the current 30 with still 5 errors allowed.

The finance law has modified the fees for obtaining the powered pleasure boat license

• The license issuance fee, fiscal stamp: €78 (instead of €70)

• The examination fee for the "coastal" and "inland waters" options is removed

• The examination fee remains fixed at €38 for the "offshore extension" and "large inland waters extension" options

The practical exam undergoes no changes: 1 h 30 in group and 2 h 00 individually to confirm your skills. (except for persons who already hold the "inland waters" option or the "coastal" option).

• Controlling engine starting
• Rescuing a person overboard
• Ensuring individual, occupant and other navigator safety
• Recognizing navigation aids
• Identifying hazards
• Adjusting your trajectory
• Using distress means
• Mooring the boat
