The Gladiator 631 Next project was launched at the end of 2019 with the idea of creating the most reliable and highest-performing yacht ever built, with the lowest fuel consumption per nautical mile ratio. Canados partnered with naval architect Simone Cesati, an expert in high-tech composite construction and race boat builder.
The boat concept focused on creating a model that:
- would reach 50 knots with very conventional engines, optimizing reliability with minimal maintenance needs;
- would be extremely easy to handle, so that an owner could pilot the boat themselves;
- would redefine the concept of a day cruiser with vast outdoor social spaces, while offering two of the three cabins with sufficient comfort and luxury for long-term cruising;
- would achieve a significant top speed while being capable of cruising all day at 35 knots consuming at least 30% less fuel than any other yacht in the category.
To achieve these results, Canados' technical department and Simone Cesati opted for truly innovative new technologies. In short, the power-to-weight ratio had to be kept below 10 kg per hp. As a result, the Gladiator 631 Next's weight does not exceed 18.5 tons while all other 20-meter boats on the market range between 24 and 26 tons. This significant weight saving could not be obtained by reducing structures but had to be found in technology, materials, and light interior construction, while the hydrodynamics had to be very advanced, notably using Kevlar and carbon fiber.
