The Great Zot is a 16-meter gaff schooner, an emblem of Ajaccio's maritime heritage, distinguished by its strong identity, navigation history, and commitment. With a total length of 23 meters from the bowsprit to the end of the boom, and a beam of 4 meters, it presents an elegant and powerful silhouette characteristic of traditional Mediterranean vessels. Its gaff rig, comprising two quadrangular gunter sails and triangular foresails including a bowsprit-trinquette, develops approximately 166 m² of sail. The varnished wooden masts, rebuilt in 2020, reaching 17 meters from the keel, contribute fully to its authentic character. Here, no unnecessary modern assistance: maneuvers are performed the old-fashioned way, without winches or reefing gear, using a pulley system emphasizing pure, physical sailing sensation.
This sailboat is not only remarkable aesthetically. It is a recognized sailing unit, actively participating in classic regattas, notably during the Corsica Classic, where it achieved first place in the gaff category in a previous edition and second place in 2025. Capable of reaching 10 knots on a reach, it demonstrates solid performance against more contemporary units, while maintaining traditional tiller-steered metal steering. Regularly highlighted by regional media such as France 3 Corse Via Stella or Corsica Matin, it enjoys local notoriety that enhances its value and credibility.
Onboard, the layout is designed for life at sea and crew accommodation. The boat features three crew cabins with two berths each, and a rear owner’s cabin. The galley is located on port side, with ample storage, two coolers, and a small refrigerator, while starboard sleeping quarters complete the sleeping area. Two toilets are available: a manual head at the front and an electric head in the cabin. Service batteries are installed under the starboard bed of the owner’s cabin. The system is complemented by a 300-liter diesel tank, a Seatronic solar installation with two recent panels, a portable generator, a fixed and a mobile VHF radio, a distress beacon, and navigation equipment including a compass and GPS.
The deck and exterior equipment show signs of regular, practical use. The boat has a motorized dinghy. Lazy bags have been recently replaced, and several structural elements such as the shrouds, stays, and forestays have been renewed. Maintenance is ongoing with a hull repaint scheduled from March 20 to April 1, including key touch-ups, confirming active upkeep. Some rigging lines may need replacement, and two mainsails have just been serviced, continuing the boat’s vibrant, active, and monitored lifecycle.
Beyond its technical features, The Great Zot embodies a history, an identity, and a community. Helm during years by a dedicated crew around figures such as its historic owner and captain, it fosters a strong human network, making it much more than just a sailboat. It follows in the tradition of large Mediterranean gaff schooners, balancing heritage, transmission, and active navigation.
This type of vessel is aimed at a knowledgeable buyer sensitive to traditional sailing, project potential, and patrimonial value. It is not a standard pleasure craft but a unique platform for developing a vision, whether associative, event-driven, or simply passionate.
