Flexibility and Performance: Their compact design with a simple overhead camshaft and long piston stroke ensures Mercury FourStroke outboards 40 - 60 hp provide more torque at low rpm for excellent acceleration even when pushing a heavy load.
Large displacement, long stroke, four cylinders, and overhead camshaft guarantee maximum power and smooth handling with Command Thrust models.

Power steering with threaded knob: The 40 hp manual start model, with long shaft (20 in/508 mm) and tiller steering, is also available with a threaded knob power steering. This reduces the time and effort needed for removal/reinstallation of the outboard on the transom of the boat.

Big Tiller: The centrally mounted Big Tiller, as an option, offers optimal control. A longer tiller handle with a convenient trim button, a quick-access forward/reverse lever, and an optional digital trim control allow engine speed reduction down to 700 rpm in 10 rpm steps.

Instant starts / energy efficiency: Mercury's electronic fuel injection (EFI) guarantees reliable instant starts, greater energy efficiency, immediate throttle response, and protection against fuel quality issues.
