Flexibility and performance: Their compact design with a simple overhead camshaft and long piston stroke provides Mercury FourStroke outboards 40 - 60 hp with more low-end torque for excellent acceleration even when powering a heavy load.
The large displacement, long stroke, four cylinders, and single overhead camshaft guarantee optimal power and smooth navigation with Command Thrust models.

Press paddle shift: The 40 hp model with manual start, long shaft (20 in / 508 mm), and tiller steering is also available with a paddle shift. This option reduces the time and effort required to install/remove the outboard engine from the transom of the boat.

The Big Tiller: The centrally mounted Big Tiller, optional, offers optimal control. A longer tiller handle with an integrated trim button, conveniently placed reverse lever, and an optional digital trim control allow the engine speed to be reduced down to 700 RPM in increments of 10 RPM.

Instant start / energy efficiency: Mercury's Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) provides reliable instant starts, greater energy efficiency, immediate acceleration, and protection against fuel quality issues.
