Flexibility and performance: Their compact design with a simple overhead camshaft and long piston stroke grants Mercury FourStroke outboards 40-60 hp more torque at low rpm for excellent acceleration even under heavy loads.
The large displacement, long stroke, four-cylinder, and single overhead camshaft guarantee optimal power and smooth navigation with Command Thrust models.

Bow-mounted tiller: The 40 hp model with manual start, long shaft (20 inches / 508 mm), and tiller steering is also available with a bow-mounted tiller. This reduces time and effort required for removal/reinstallation of the outboard on the transom.

The Big Tiller: The centrally mounted Big Tiller, optional, offers optimal control. A longer tiller handle integrates a convenient trim button, the gear shift lever is within easy reach, and an optional digital trolling control allows reducing engine rpm down to 700 rpm in increments of 10 rpm.

Instant starts / energy-efficient operation: Mercury’s electronic fuel injection (EFI) provides reliable instant starts, greater energy efficiency, immediate response, and protection against fuel quality issues.

Charging system: A high-power 18-amp alternator keeps batteries charged and fishing electronics powered.

More control, more power: A gear ratio of 2.33:1 with larger gears by 44% delivers greater thrust. The dipper reverse is ultra-smooth.
A deeper-water mounting bracket, a propeller with 20% more blade surface, and a lower gear ratio ensure unmatched thrust, maneuverability, and balance.
