Flexibility and performance: Their compact design with a simple overhead cam and long piston stroke gives Mercury FourStroke outboard motors 40-60 hp more low-rev torque for excellent acceleration even when pushing a heavy load.
Large displacement, long stroke, four cylinders, and overhead cam guarantee optimal power and smooth navigation with Command Thrust models.

Vis-à-vis press with butterfly valve: The 40 hp model with manual start, long shaft (20 in/508 mm), and tiller steering is also available with a butterfly valve. This trim reduces the time and effort required to install/remove the outboard engine on the transom of the boat.

The Big Tiller: The centrally mounted Big Tiller, optional, offers optimal control. A longer tiller handle integrates a convenient trim button, the throttle lever is within reach, and an optional digital trolling control allows engine speed reduction down to 700 RPM in 10 RPM steps.

Instant start / Energy efficiency: Mercury's electronic fuel injection (EFI) provides reliable instant starts, greater energy efficiency, immediate throttle response, and protection against fuel quality issues.

Charging system: A high-output 18-amp alternator keeps batteries charged and fishing electronics operational.

More control, more power: A 2.33:1 gear ratio with larger gear teeth (44% bigger) provides increased thrust. Desmodromic reverse is ultra-smooth.
A deeper water-drive mounting, a propeller with 20% more blade surface, and a lower gear ratio deliver unmatched thrust, maneuverability, and planing ability.
