1998 J/120 - high-end racing-cruising yacht, ready to sail
This 1998 J/120 is an excellent example of what J Boats does best: a fast, lightweight, safe, and enjoyable cruising sailboat. This boat has recently undergone major structural work, as well as a complete upgrade of the rigging, sails, and safety equipment, making it particularly reassuring for those seeking a high-performance but trouble-free sailboat.
The boat is owned by a French company, which allows, in the case of purchase by a European company subject to VAT, for the recovery/deduction of VAT on the acquisition.
Construction and hull
The hull and deck are built using high-tech balsa/fiberglass sandwich, with vacuum infusion "Scrimp system" process, known for its rigidity, lightweight, and durability. The hull and deck were molded by TPI Composites (USA) and completed by J Composites in France, ensuring quality finish.
The deck features a two-tone non-slip surface. The hull is finished in an elegant blue gelcoat "Flag Blue" with white toerail and waterline stripe.
Recent significant work:
Complete sanding of the hull and full preparation of the keel area.
Keel/hull joint completely refitted by a professional.
Repaired interior linings for a clean and healthy interior.
The lead keel is attached to a molded salmon and the boat is steered by a balanced rudder mounted on an anodized aluminum stock. The steering wheel is a new Carbonautica wheel (2023), providing precision and comfort.
Propulsion is via a Volvo Penta MD2040B inboard diesel engine, driving a Gori folding propeller on a stainless steel shaft, coupled with a 110-liter diesel tank.
Rigging, fittings, and deck
The boat is equipped with a Sparcraft aluminum mast and boom, with a tapered mast and two levels of aerodynamic spreader bars. The following points have been particularly carefully attended to:
Full rig replacement in 2023.
New Profurl roller furler (2023).
Retractable carbon fiber bowsprit, ideal for Code 0 and asymmetric spinnakers.
Lazy jacks and reef bands for easy single-handed operation.
Jackstays in place.
The deck hardware is racing-quality:
2 Harken 48ST primary winches.
4 Harken 44ST winches for halyards and mainsheet.
Spinlock rope clutches for halyards and sheets.
Harken jib tracks with adjustable carriages from the cockpit.
Harken genoa track.
Harken mainsheet track.
Safety on deck is ensured by fore/aft pushpits, double lifelines, and a transom swim ladder.
Sails
The sail plan is one of this boat's major strengths, with a recent high-end wardrobe and an all-around sail wardrobe:
Recent sails (2023):
Carbon mainsail (2023).
Carbon genoa #2 (2023).
Carbon genoa #3 (2023).
