115 XV Selva (yamaha)
Selva has chosen to expand its range of semi-rigid boats with slightly more sophisticated units from the Marlin shipyard. On the 630, pairing with the XSR version of the 115 hp Selva proves to be an excellent choice.
Emotion Line is the new series created by Selva Marine to enter the high-end semi-rigid boat segment. For this, the Italian manufacturer has selected another renowned Italian builder for these elegant and well-equipped inflatable boats: Marlin Boat. This brand has also been present on the French market for several years. The three models currently offered, with the Emotion Line 630 featured in our test positioned nearly midway between the 540 and 790, come from Marlin's Dynamic series, which serves as their entry-level range. Regarding pricing, the package offered by Selva with the 115 XSR falls within a reasonable range, especially considering this highly tuned version of the original Yamaha engine block. The boat also features a satisfying standard equipment package including hydraulic steering, an enormous solarium at the front (length 210 cm), and especially two very long bathing platforms framing the engine. To avoid hindering circulation, the bathing ladder is carefully integrated into a molded compartment. Although the Sport Line and Evolution Line ranges, already marketed by Selva, are of very satisfactory build quality, it is clear from details such as the gelcoat interior of the lockers, the hood supports using gas pistons, or the presence of a glove compartment in the command station, that the Emotion Line offers slightly superior features. With 27 years of experience, the Italian manufacturer did not overlook the numerous storage options. The largest storage is naturally located under the rear bench, where the battery, fuel filter, and two cockpit drains, secured by plastic valves, are also situated. The substantial reinforcements indicate the hull’s durability, capable of easily handling the maximum power of 150 horsepower. To improve circulation to the bathing platforms, Marlin designed a backrest that tilts easily backward, though of course this does not replace the practicality of a small side passage. The upholstery is very attractive and is secured to the polyester structure with snap buttons. During our test, even in headwinds, no cushions detached. The tilting backrest principle was also applied to the steering bench to allow comfortable sitting or standing driving. However, the console and windshield could benefit from extra height to better protect from the wind. When pushing our test boat in all directions, we experienced not the slightest spray. Backed by patents, the hull designer added multiple strakes to optimize both performance and navigation through rough seas. The strength of this boat is undoubtedly its natural overall balance and its ease of cutting waves, even when irregular. The 115 horsepower XSR, eager as can be, demonstrates a sporty temperament, accelerating rapidly into high revs. Its limits seem difficult to reach, and at nearly 6,200 rpm, it propels this hull to 38 knots without any signs of struggling. Adjustments made to the mapping by Selva Marine’s technical team seem particularly effective, their extensive racing experience likely contributing to these results.
No issues either with the steering, which is smooth, precise, and very effective, even when pushing the boat to its limits. During tight turns, we did not notice any skidding, with the hull’s pronounced V-shape resulting in a marked inward tilt, but perfectly controllable. At rest, with three people onboard plus full tanks of water and fuel, the rear part of the floats is in contact with the water, ensuring stability that will be appreciated when moored.
While the layout of this semi-rigid boat is rather conventional, its navigation capabilities are quite spectacular. The manufacturer seems to have found the perfect compromise between a high-performance and comfortable hull. Thanks to this superb hull, the boosted XSR version of the Selva 115 horsepower can fully showcase its talent.
