115 XV Selva (yamaha)
Selva has chosen to expand its range of semi-rigid boats with some more sophisticated units coming from the Marlin yard. On the 630, pairing it with the XSR version of the 115 hp Selva proves to be an excellent choice.
Emotion Line is the new series created by Selva Marine to enter the high-end semi-rigid segment. For this, the Italian engine manufacturer selected another renowned Italian manufacturer for these elegant and well-equipped inflatable boats: Marlin Boat. This brand has been present on the French market for several years. The three models currently offered, with the Emotion Line 630 of our review being almost midway between the 540 and 790, come from Marlin's Dynamic series, which serves as their entry-level range. Regarding pricing, the package offered by Selva, with the 115 XSR, falls within a reasonable range considering this turbocharged version of the original Yamaha engine block. The boat also features satisfactory standard equipment with hydraulic steering, a large sunbathing deck at the front (length 210 cm), and especially two very long bathing platforms surrounding the engine. To avoid hindering movement, the bathing ladder is carefully integrated into a recessed housing. Although the Sport Line and Evolution Line ranges, already marketed by Selva, are of very satisfactory build quality, it is clear from details like the gelcoat inside the lockers, the support of the hoods using gas struts, and the presence of a glove box on the helm station that Emotion Line offers slightly superior features. With 27 years of experience, the Italian manufacturer did not skimp on storage space either. The largest storage compartment is obviously located under the rear bench seat, which also houses the battery, fuel filter, and the two cockpit drains secured with plastic valves. The substantial reinforcement indicates the hull’s resistance level, capable of easily handling the maximum power of 150 horsepower. To improve circulation to the bathing platforms, Marlin designed a backrest that tilts easily backward, though this does not replace the practicality of a small side pass-through. The upholstery is very attractive and securely attached to the polyester structure with snap buttons. During our test, even against headwinds, no cushions detached. The tilting backrest principle was also applied to the helm bench for comfortable sitting or standing driving. However, the console and windshield could benefit from slightly increased height for better wind protection. When pushing our test boat in all directions, we experienced no spray whatsoever. Holding certifications, the hull designer multiplied stringers to optimize both performance and seaworthiness in rough seas. The strength of this boat is undoubtedly its natural overall balance and ease of cutting through waves, even sometimes disorderly ones. The 115 horsepower XSR, eagerly spirited, demonstrates a sporty temperament, reaching high revs very quickly. Its limits seem difficult to reach, and at nearly 6,200 rpm, it propels this hull to 38 knots without any sign of strain. The modifications made to the mapping by Selva Marine’s technical team seem particularly effective; their extensive racing experience likely contributed to these results.
There are also no issues with the steering, which is smooth, precise, and very effective, even when pushing the boat to its limits. In sharp turns, we did not notice the slightest hint of slipping, with a hull that, given its pronounced V-shape, adopts a marked inner tilt, yet remains entirely controllable. At standstill, with three people on board plus full water and fuel tanks, the rear part of the pontoons contacts the water to ensure stability when moored.
While the layout of this semi-rigid is fairly conventional, its navigational capabilities are rather spectacular. The manufacturer seems to have found the perfect compromise between a high-performance hull and comfort. Thanks to this superb hull, the boosted XSR version of the Selva 115 horsepower can fully showcase its talent.
