My Amel 50 has sailed across oceans, seas, and rivers, traveling throughout Europe, South America, and Oceania, including the Faroe Islands, Iceland, the White Sea, Brazil, Patagonia, Chile, and now, French Polynesia where I will sadly leave it. This sailboat has experienced a wide range of landscapes and climates, from the hottest to the coldest, and has handled them with ease.

Equipment and Features

This 2020 Amel 50 is exceptionally well-equipped for offshore cruising, featuring a complete Garmin navigation suite — including a touchscreen chartplotter, sounder, radar, and AIS. It also has an Iridium GO satellite communication system and portable solar panels wired directly into the enhanced lithium battery bank. The electrical system has been further optimized with an 800W inverter and a Mastervolt monitoring system.

Rigging and Sailing

The Amel 50 rigging is designed for ease of handling, with a manual Facnor self-tacking furling jib, a manual genoa furling system, a furling mainsail in the mast, and three upgraded electric winches with all furling lines led to the cockpit area, meaning this vessel can be controlled safely from its central cockpit. With a set of cushions increasing comfort at anchor and underway, it truly is one of the safest vessels for offshore cruising.

Interior and Comfort

Below deck, the interior is finished in light oak with custom upholstery, and includes two refrigerator drawers in the galley, a heating system, pre-installation for a washing machine, and a safe in the aft cabin. Numerous thoughtful upgrades throughout — including custom stainless steel kitchen holders, additional handrails, and a dedicated locker for a generator — make this vessel particularly well-prepared for serious cruising.

Engine and Propulsion

The engine compartment houses a Volvo D3-110 HP inboard diesel engine, coupled with a Volvo Penta HS25AE-A hydraulic gearbox for smooth and responsive power delivery. Propulsion is further enhanced by a Varifold folding propeller, which reduces drag under sail while maintaining excellent reverse thrust. A retractable 8 HP (24V) bow thruster provides additional control during docking maneuvers and in tight spaces.
