History of the Lagoon 380
The Lagoon 380 is a cruising catamaran designed by Van Peteghem/Lauriot-Prevost and first built in 1999. It quickly became the best-selling cruising catamaran of all time. This model was built by Jeanneau's catamaran division in France, later sold to Bordeaux Yacht Construction (CNB), part of the Beneteau Group. Production began in 1999, and the upgraded Lagoon 380 S2 was introduced in 2003. Production continued until 2019, with approximately 1000 boats built.
The Lagoon 380 is mainly built with solid polyester fiberglass below the waterline, with sandwich fiber-reinforced panels and foam or balsa above. The deck is a balsa sandwich. It features a fractional sloop rig with a deck-mounted mast, swept diamond-shaped spreaders, and aluminum spars with continuous stainless steel shrouds. The twin hulls have nearly vertical bows, reverse transom platforms with steps and swim platforms, twin rudders controlled by a wheel, and fixed twin keels.
The Lagoon 380 has been used for ocean crossings and world circumnavigations. It is known for above-average performance, capable of reaching speeds up to 10 knots in strong winds. With wider hulls, low aspect ratio keels, and lower weight, the Lagoon 380's performance decreases significantly when sailing upwind. It is also slower in light winds, and most sailors prefer to motor sail.
Why is this Lagoon 380 an interesting buy?
The Lagoon 380 is a compelling purchase for several reasons. Firstly, it is the best-selling cruising catamaran of all time, testament to its popularity and reliability. Designed by Van Peteghem/Lauriot-Prevost, it perfectly combines robustness, performance, and elegance. Its solid polyester fiberglass and lightweight sandwich construction provide an ideal balance between durability and performance. Additionally, its ability to undertake ocean crossings and world circumnavigations makes it a safe choice for offshore adventures. Finally, its spacious layout and easy handling make it ideal for families or entertaining guests, offering unmatched comfort and privacy onboard.
